Most times people use food as a way to manage emotions. We have all done it, we feel sad, mad, anxious, hurt, guilty, and then a large portion of those brownies are gone. Food is a relatively normal way that people cope with tough feelings.
With binge eating this coping is in excess, and occurs almost daily. It becomes one of the only ways that one can manage hard feelings, and it also becomes a way to avoid or numb feelings all together. Over time this becomes a habit, and the brain actually begins to depend on excessive eating to manage emotions.
